Video: Lupe Fiasco Kicked Off Stage For Anti-Obama Rants

Lupe Fiasco

Almost 2 years ago in 2011, Lupe Fiasco released his song Words I Never Said in which he begins a rant of statements;

Limbaugh is a racist, Glenn Beck is a racist. Gaza Strip was getting bombed, Obama didn’t say shit. That’s why I ain’t vote for him, next one either.”

That caught a lot of people by surprise and when he was asked to clarify, he made it worse by stating, “the biggest terrorist is Obama in the United States of America.” which made black supporters go pretty insane.

With all that’s known about Lupe Fiasco and his ultimate dislike of President Obama, why in he world would Washington DC event promoter StartUp Rockon hire him to perform at an Obama Inauguration Party? No idea. But it happened.

In the video below, you can see that he doesn’t shy away from performing Words I Never Said and was even reported to have performed a 30 minute diatribe filled with anti-Obama rants..at an Obama Inauguration Party. Thought we might want to drill that home again for perspective purposes. The 30 minute piece is what was reported to have started the issue because he refused to move to the next song. The video also shows the club then dropping the lights to shut him down, but Lupe Fiasco keeps playing through the bands stage monitors until eventually security comes and escorts him off the stage.

Spin magazine reported that media company HyperVocal, a partner of event host StartUp Rockon, issued a statement emphasizing that Lupe Fiasco “was not ‘kicked off stage’ for an ‘anti-Obama rant.'” They said, “Instead, after a bizarrely repetitive, jarring performance that left the crowd vocally dissatisfied, organizers decided to move on to the next act.”

We’re confident that you can watch the video and see that he was kicked off the stage. This was not a “Hey, we’re going to move on to the next act” scenario. This was a “Get the hell off the stage Obama hater.”

While comments could go either way with this “fiasco”, the blame lies ultimately with the club promoter who obviously did no research whatsoever. Hats off to Lupe Fiasco by staying true to his self because everyone is entitled to their opinions, but who’s in the right here?

Prince Hits Minneapolis To Plan For 2013 Tour

Prince and Andy Allo

Prince is leaving the confines of Paisley Park to perform in Minneapolis at some shows at the Dakota Jazz Club.  We were informed by Dr. Funkenberry, that the pop band Fun. took over Paisley Park studios, so Prince is moving their tour rehearsals to the downtown Minneapolis jazz club to keep the ball rolling.

Prince will manhandle the club for 3 nights starting tonight (Wednesday 1/16) where they’ll audition a new drummer (por qua?), do some improvisational music (aka jam session) as well as have DJ Rashida spinning some “new and unreleased music” (by whom?). There were two shows scheduled tonight at 8pm and 11pm CST and both were $70 a piece. Sold out.

The jam continues on Thursday with 2 shows at 8pm and 11pm with tickets going for $100-$150 in what’s being referred to as an afterparty vibe. And then closing out the three day stint with 2 “surprise” shows on Friday at 8pm and 11pm with tickets ranging from $200-$250. You’re best bet to see Prince would probably be on this night, but we’re told he’ll be making appearances on all 3 nights but just with varying levels of involvement. And again, all shows are sold out anyway, so the best anyone can do is hope for bootleg leaks on these shows.

Dr. Funkenberry announced that they will do a “spreecast” on Wednesday night that people can take advantage of here where he’ll discuss some of the happenings along with a special guest called 3rdEyeGirl who is Prince’s new girl band. This isn’t a live feed, but Funkenberry notoriously has a lot of Prince info.

This also brings up two very important questions. The first is where will this next tour be performing at? Could it be Atlanta or disappointingly somewhere very far away? It’s hit or miss, but we’ll make sure that you know either way.

And the next question that may be even more interesting is whether or not Prince has any involvement in the next Fun. album? Are they simply using the studio or will Prince have his hands in the production or even better, a guest spot or two?

Well, you know where to tune in for the answers, right? Of course you do. Right here, baby.

Justin Timberlake’s New Album is Coming

http://countdown.justintimberlake.com/

After Justin Timberlake teased his fans repeatedly over the past few days with a tweed promise of an announcement followed by a tweeted message that a surprise was coming at midnight on 1/13/2013, the announcement finally hit in the form of a new single called Suit and Tie featuring Jay Z that was produced by Timbaland is due to be on his upcoming album entitled The 20/20 Experience.

The new album isn’t expected to drop until sometime this year, which he admits is yet another tease, but the new single is available now on iTunes. On his website at http://countdown.justintimberlake.com/, Justin also leaves the following open letter to his fans;

An Open Letter to you (the fans):
I hope this gets to you the right way. It’s the only way I know to do it. Some people may criticize me for the last 3 days. But it was fun, right?? Right?!?! Besides, I’d rather speak directly to all of you. And, who can knock me for having a little bit of fun with it?
Well… No more teasing. Although, it was A LOT of fun. (Did I mention that I’m having fun with this?? Ha!)

*Makes a serious face*

So, here goes:
This year is an exciting one for me. As you probably have heard through the “grapevine,” I’m gearing up for a big 2013.
Back in June of last year, I quietly started working on what is now, my next journey with that thing I love called MUSIC.

The inspiration for this really came out of the blue and to be honest, I didn’t expect anything out of it. I just went into the studio and started playing around with some sounds and songs. It was probably the best time I’ve had in my career… Just creating with no rules and/or end goal in mind and really enjoying the process.

What I came up with is something I couldn’t be more excited about! It is full of inspiration that I grew up listening to and some newfound muses that I’ve discovered along the way.

I’m calling it “The 20/20 Experience,” and it’s coming out this year.

I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.

That’s all I’m giving you for now… I know, I know! Again, with the teasing!!!

Get ready. This is going to be fun (well, at least it is for me).

So we’ll let you know as information gets released, but it’s a good start!

Video: Justin Timberlake is Ready. – New Music?

Justin Timberlake

On Sunday, January 13th, 2013, Justin Timberlake is unveiling…something.  His last album release was back in 2006 with FutureSex/Lovesounds and one measly release with Madonna on her song 4 minutes. Then Justin Timberlake launched a tweet showing just a date and time of Thursday, January 10th, 2013 at 9:01am PST;

The speculation then went viral. New song? New album? New video? Then today, the answer came, yet again via a tweet which very simply stated that he was “ready“:

Justin Timberlake

And the tweet connected to a new video. BUT the new video had yet another countdown;

So now the speculation continues, but it appears that the album which is produced by long time collaborator Timbaland, could be released in its entirety on Sunday without the normal pomp and circumstance.

Here’s hoping for a full on new album without the teaser single. Just give it to us already!

Review: Andy Allo – Superconductor

Andy Allo - SuperdconductorAndy Allo is an amazing musician with a very distinct sounding voice who had already gained some traction with her album Unfresh released in 2009 which was slowly putting her in the same class as Jill Jones and the neo-soul community relatively quickly considering how long it normally takes to break through to that crowd. She had created a unique sound that she called “Alter.Hip.Soul“. She had also gained some notoriety as a face on G4’s Attack of the Show along with campaigns for Kohl’s and others. Then along came Prince.

Prince and Andy Allo connected almost immediately and thus began a relationship that put her onboard as singer and guitarist for NPG and shortly afterwards released the newest album Superconductor just launched late 2012. The album was executive produced by Prince and he co-wrote 3 songs on the album including the title track Superconductor, The Calm and Long Gone. All 3 of which have his very distinctive fingerprints with the poppy chord jumps ala Diamonds and Pearls. Essentially, they sound just like a Prince song would.  Even though he’s only noted on those three songs, there are many touches and chord progressions throughout the entire album that are very distinctively Prince sounding such as the album’s first single People Pleaser.

People Pleaser is an incredibly funky track that should have no problem finding some filler time on the dance floors complete with touches from masterful musicians. The album is loaded with amazing talent including saxophonist Maceo Parker, New Orleans superstar Trombone Shorty, drummer John Blackwell, Morris Hayes on keys, Hornheadz, Ida Neilsen on bass guitar and even background vocals by Shelby J, Elisa Fiorillo, and Liv Warfield.

Of the most shockingly beautiful tracks on the album would include the tracks Long Gone, Nothing More, and Story of You & I. All of them hearken to a Sheryl Crow level of songwriting prowess with seductive melodies and tasty grooves. While slower songs normally take the longest time to grow after a first listen, these immediately attach themselves to your psyche with sweet flows and subtle changes.

Andy Allo noted that “the compositions for Superconductor incorporates a variety of layers and a whole lot of Funk.”, but with exception to a few songs (People Pleaser, Yellow Gold and When Stars Collide), the funk is very subtle, but there nonetheless. All being said, we’ll grace this album with a 4 out 5 afros because this time Prince has produced another nice groovy flowing piece of artistry and at the helm is a beautiful and very talented young lady which I’m sure we won’t see the last of any time soon.

4 out of 5 afros
